Metal Gems - Rob Alsfelder

Presents:   Rob Alsfelder's Logo
Rob's Forum Avatar Rob is currently in the military and serving our country in Iraq. He hopes to return to the states next year (and we hope he does too). In the meantime he was dedicated enough to send his submission to BKG for the painting contest.

As gamers, we know that not having your full array of paint and materials handy would put one heck of a damper on the effort, but Rob went for it and did a GREAT job. Rob's handle on the forum is "Farseer_Orso".

Here is Rob's submission to the BKG Painting Contest:

This is my verminion, whom I have named Kinlord Vree. In my mind, he's a bit of a Mole Man type character (or possibly Underminer from the Incredibles, for you younger crowd), leading his Kin (and there are a LOT of kinfolk) into the promised land of sun and grass and plenty of food. He has been pretty heavily reposed and includes a fair amount of greenstuff (bandages on the legs and tail, repositioning the arms, adding fur, the purity seal type thing). Technically, his left and right legs are backwards, but I cut and greenstuffed the toes so you can't tell. He also has a weapon switch with his right hand, because I thought that a dagger was too insignificant a weapon for a lord, and is a poor match for shield fighting anyway. A weapon with reach works much better.
Aside from the greenstuff, I'm working with pretty limited tools. The rocks and sand on his base are from the Iraqi desert, and honestly aren't the best (too course, and I had to dig a few ants and a small scorpion out of the cup I scooped up outside). I didn't have much in the way of paint choices either, so he's painted in a rather muted color scheme. I thought that kind of worked, though, and I'm fairly pleased with how he came out. I learned, over the course of painting this guy, that I suck at highlighting and shading black. Something to work on in the future. I also learned that Chinese characters are ridiculously hard to draw with a brush. Props to anyone who can successfully do brush calligraphy (It's the chinese symbol for "rat", if anyone's curious). click for a bigger image

This is the first time I've ever tried to paint something coppery, and I really wanted to get that turqoise-ish oxidization to it, and I think it came out quite nicely. It took a while to find the right combination of blue, green and white to get a good turquoise, but I am extremely pleased with how it came out. I'm also very happy with the general pose, I think he gives off an air of menace as he surveys his new dominion; there's a definite feel of motion to the figure that didn't come stock. Of course, now he won't fit in a regiment, which is what the previous pose had in mind, I believe...
Anyway, I had a blast painting this guy. He's not my best work by a long shot, but I'm quite happy with it and I hope you like him! Sorry for the crappy photos...I don't have a lightbox, lamps, photoshop or a good camera out here. I did the best I could...If someone is bored enough to color correct these for me... I had a blast! Can't wait for the next one! click for a bigger image
