Presents:   Paul Wellner's Logo
Paul Wellner is a close freind of BKG Actual. He lives in Cross Plains Wisconsin with his wife Kris and their dog Guardian.

Paul has been an avid miniatures and RPG player since the dawn of time (or at least since Lincoln was in short pants).

When I showed the photo to my friend Bill, he asked me to write about how I did the conversion. I told him if I could do it, any dumb schmuck could. I really don’t do conversions - I’m more of a painter. He said, “That’s the point; people might want to see what a dumb schmuck did.” I wasn’t sure what to make of that but agreed to try and write something up.

In looking at the figure, I wanted to make it fit my concept of a Roman Centurion. First I picked the head with the helm and crest, cut the crest off turned it 90 degrees and glued it in place, then using ProCreate filled in any gaps. This figure is nice because if you mess up you have a back up head.

Next I cut the tail free from the leg so it would swing free and extend behind the figure. I planned on having his foot up on a fallen enemy and sword raised above in a victory stance. I straightened the arm and pointed sword to the sky then cut the foot free with a pair nippers so I could place the foot on his trophy. Using an Orc head from my bits box I placed it under the foot. Lastly, I decided I wanted him to wear a tunic, so once again using ProCreate I molded a tunic in the style of a Roman soldier.
Painting the figure, I wanted to use the Plague carrying Black Rat as a guide so off to Google. This is the basic color of the Verminion himself. I used vermilion as the color for the tunic and the shield highlighted with various shades of orange-red working into a lighter color. Helm was done in gold because I liked it for contrast. For the rest of the armor I used a gun metal base with silver highlighting. I painted the Orc head with the traditional green favored by the company that made the bit.

Although I do not usually add blood and goo to a weapon, I wanted to make a connection between the head and the sword. Using a glue called GOO (believe it or not) I pulled goop out of the neck and added some of the same to the sword. The shield pattern was done using Foundry’s three color system. First, I lightly drew the base pattern with a pencil and applied paint a darker shade than the color I wanted. Next, using a lighter shade (color of choice) I painted the center layer leaving some of the initial darker color on the edges. Finally, I repeated the process with a shade lighter as the final highlight.

click for a bigger image Well, that’s about it - at least the basics. Hopefully this has been of some interest or help. I guess the best advice I can give is to keep trying things. I am not a great artist and have only done a few conversions; I start small and keep trying new things.

Good luck and good Gaming.
Paul K. Wellner

Paul did not submit a write-up on the bug, but sent it to me, so I am placing it here as a bonus. I think this is one of the coolest bugs I have seen yet. I thought you all would enjoy it too! -- editor --
